Watch With Friends - FAQ

What is Watch With Friends?
Watch With Friends (aka WWF) is the easiest (and only) way to watch Netflix together on your computer or TV with friends, wherever they are. WWF is the only way to launch and sync Netflix content across multiple TVs and computers simultaneously.

How does Watch With Friends work?
The process is simple.   Someone creates a party and launches the party as a HOST. Then friends join the party as GUESTS.

Party Creation/Launch:

How to Create a Party with the WWF Mobile App

  1. Once you’ve installed the WWF mobile app, open your Netflix app (not a browser)
  2. Choose a show or movie on Netflix, tap info (i)> Share icon (the “share” links aren’t always available if you open a browser instead of the Netflix app) shareicons.jpg
  3. Tap Copy Link
  4. Open WWF app, tap Create a New Party
  5. Paste link from Netflix
  6. Create a Party Name and 4-digit Host PIN

How to Create a Party with the WWF Chrome Extension

  1. Install the WWF Chrome extension
  2. Choose a show or movie on Netflix.com and play it
  3. Click the WWF Chrome extension icon puppydog.jpg
  4. Select Create a new Party
  5. Create a Party Name and 4-digit Host PIN

Your party name is like a passcode your guests will use to find your party, so don’t be afraid to get creative and put a smile on your guests’ faces. Your Host PIN gives you control of your party, so use something you won’t forget.

After you create your party, we’ll use your party name to generate a unique party link that’s good for 7 days (or until you end your party).

Party Hosting
As a Host, you are responsible for launching/starting, controlling (play, pause, fast forward and rewind) and ending the party. You will need the Host PIN to launch a party. There can only be one Host in a party. The last one to enter as a Host (with the Host PIN) has control of the party. Only the Host can start, pause/play/fast forward/review and end a party.

The Guests can join the party by clicking on the shared URL or entering the friendly party name that is shared with you.

You can create, Host and join from a PC/Mac, iPhone/iPad or an Android Phone/Tablet.

  • To view on Nvidia Shield, TiVo Stream 4k or other Android boxes, join the party using Chrome and then cast it to your streaming device (Menu> Cast).

What streaming apps does Watch With Friends support?
Currently WWF supports Netflix on Chrome (PC/MAC), Roku, Apple TV, AndroidTV.

Do I need an ethernet/WiFi connection to use WWF?
All you need is any kind of reliable internet connection to create, Host, or join a WWF party.  In order to watch the show on your TV, your mobile device (running the WWF app) will need to be on the same wireless network as your Roku/Apple TV.

Make sure you have reliable internet access with respect to signal strength as well as bandwidth.  Mesh networks often have lower bandwidth capabilities.  Unstable internet will cause video/audio anomalies.

Do I need a Caavo Control Center to enjoy WWF?
You do not need a Caavo Control Center for WWF.  If you do have a Caavo Control Center, you can use the power monitor feature to detect when your Roku/Apple TV wakes up which will automatically turn on your AV system and switch to the correct streaming device.

Do all party Attendees (including Host) need their own Netflix accounts?
Yes, everyone will need to be logged into their Netflix account to Host or Join a party.  Then WWF will manage things so everyone can watch it together in perfect sync.

CREATING A PARTY

What devices can I use to create a party?
You can create/Host a party on a PC/MAC via a Chrome Browser with the WWF plug-in added.  You can also create/Host a WWF party via the WWF App on iOS devices (iPhones/iPads) and Android devices (phones/tablets).

How do I create a party from a PC or MAC?
To create a party from a PC or MAC, you will need a Chrome Browser and WWF plugin. Search for WWF on Chrome Extension store or Launch Chrome and install the plugin. Then play your favorite show on Netflix and click on the extension on the top right corner. Click on ‘Create a Party’, give a name to your party and a Host PIN. You are all set.

How do I create a party from a phone or a tablet?
Download the WWF app from App Store for iPhone or iPad and from Android Play Store for an Android phone or tablet, click on “Create a New Party” and follow the directions to. (Go to your favorite Netflix show and click on the share link and paste it in the dialog box. Give a name to your party and assign a Host PIN)

Must party names be unique?  What if my party name already exists?
Yes, party names must be unique across all WWF active users so be creative.

If the party name you have chosen already exists, you will receive a message to create a different one. Parties/names are deleted after a party ends or after 7 days so names can be reused at that time.

How do I invite Guests to my party?
You can copy the link to your party when it is created and send that link to your Guests or you can send them the exact name of the party and they can join the party by searching for that name.

Can I invite Guests from within the WWF app?
Yes, simply click the “Share” or “Email” icon once you reach the “Party Created” screen.  There is also an “Invite” link (mobile) or “copy link” (Chrome) after you’ve started the party.  You can also just let your guests know the name of the party and date/time that you will host it.  On that date/time, all your guests need to do is enter the party name, click “Find Party” and then join the party.

Can I schedule a party for a later date?
Once you create a party, it can be launched anytime within the next 7 days at which time it will be deleted.  So pick a party date/time within the next 7 days and let your guests know.

What is the Host PIN code used for?
The Host PIN allows the Host of a party to declare themselves as the Host when joining the party.  Joining as the Host allows control of the party (play, pause, FF/RW, and End). There can be only one Host of a party at any given time.  If someone else declares themselves a Host with the correct PIN, it will bump out the previous Host.

How can I cancel or reschedule a party?
You cannot cancel a party at this time.  Just ignore the party you have created and create a new one. We will take care of removing the unused party.  If the party has not started, you can reschedule it by letting your guests know the new date/time (the party must be launched/started within 7 days of party creation).

LAUNCHING & HOSTING A PARTY

I am the Host. How do I start the party?
As a Host, make sure you have your party name or URL and the Host PIN handy. You won't be able to start the party or join as a Host if you do not have the pin. On the browser plugin or the app, enter the party name, click Find Party, then click on ‘I’m the Host’, enter your 4 digit pin, click “Start Party” and click play in Netflix.

  • To view on Nvidia Shield, TiVo Stream 4k or other Android boxes, join the party using Chrome and then cast it to your streaming device (Menu> Cast).

Are party attendees "announced" as they join/leave a party?
Attendees are not announced at any time. The number of attendees is shown at the top of the WWF app screen for the party.

How do I know who has joined a party (if I am Host or Guest)?
Guest names are not requested when joining a party and thus are not available to attendees or Hosts.  The number of attendees is shown at the top of the WWF app screen for the party.

Is there a limit to the number of party Guests?
The number of Guests who can join a WWF party is not limited. There can only be one Host of a party at any time.

As a Host, can I leave and rejoin a party?  (how?)
Yes. You can leave the party and rejoin as a Host. During the time that you have left the party, the content continues to play (aka the party never stops). When you join in, you pick up where all the Guests currently are and regain control of the party.

Can there be more than one Host?
No. There is always only one active Host. The person who joins last as a Host (with the Host PIN) is the active Host.

As a Host, can I change devices during a party?
Yes you can. Leave the party and rejoin as a Host on another device.

What happens to the party if the Host leaves (i.e. control)?
During the time that the host is away, the content continues to play (aka the party never stops). When you the host joins back in, everyone will sync back up with the host and the host will regain control of the party.

As a Host, what type of control do I have on the show (play, pause, etc)?
Hosts can pause, play, FF, RW, or end a party for all attendees.

Hosts can do this from the WWF app on their mobile device or via chrome.

If the Host is watching via Roku or Apple TV, they can also use their Roku/Apple TV ODR remote control however pressing the wrong button on these remotes may bump the Host out of the party so using an ODR is not recommended.

If you end the party, a notification is sent to guests but the program will continue playing.  Guests will again have control of all functions at that point.

Can attendees talk/chat with each other during the party?
Attendees can chat via normal texting however there is not a built-in communication feature within WWF.

Can the party continue to the next episode of a show or must another party be created?
The party will end at the end of the show/episode.  Multiple parties will need to be scheduled for binging multiple shows/episodes.

Does my party end automatically when the show is over?
Yes, the party will end automatically at the end of the show/episode.

How do I manually end a party?
The party will end automatically at the end of the show/episode. The Host can also end the party for everyone at any time via the WWF app or chrome plug-in.

What if I close the WWF app on my mobile device?
If you just switch to another app and come back to the WWF, you will continue to remain in the party but possibly out of sync until you switch back. However, if you kill the app, then you will need to rejoin as Host/Guest once you launch the app again.

How long is a party active for?
A WWF party (name/link/PIN) is active for up 7 days from creation and the party must be held within that timeframe or it will be deleted.  Once a party has been launched/ended, it will automatically be deleted.

What is the difference between leaving and ending a party?
If you leave a party, you can always join back, either as a Guest or a Host. However, when you end a party, the party is over! No one can join the party anymore and full control is returned to each guest and the party name will be deleted.

ATTENDING/JOINING A PARTY

How do I join a party as a Guest?
To join as a Guest you need the name of the Party or the URL that is shared by the creator. Click on the URL or enter the Party Name via the chrome plug-in or iOS/Android App

  • To view on Nvidia Shield, TiVo Stream 4k or other Android boxes, join the party using Chrome and then cast it to your streaming device (Menu> Cast).

What devices can I join and watch from?
You can join/watch a party on a PC/MAC via a Chrome Browser with the WWF plug-in added.  You can also join a WWF party via the WWF App on iOS devices (iPhones/iPads) or Android devices (phones/tablets) and then watch the party on Netflix on your Roku, RokuTV, or Apple TV.

Can I watch 2 different parties on 2 different TVs?
Yes, but you need to make very sure you use different mobile devices and different TVs.  A single mobile device can host/join only one party at a time.  In order to host/join another party, you will need to either select “LEAVE PARTY” on that mobile device first or use a second mobile device to host/join a second party on the second Roku/Apple TV.

How do I join a party and watch on a Roku?
Download the WWF iOS or Android app on your phone or tablet, join the Party and select your Roku device and WWF will launch the content and synchronize it to the host.
You may wish to give your Roku devices unique names if you have more than one in your home so you know which Roku to choose from the app.

If your Roku does not show up as an option then this is nearly certainly due to the phone being on a different network or subnet than the Roku.

How do I join a party and watch on an Apple TV?
Make sure the Caavo Companion app is downloaded, installed, and launched/open on your Apple TV.

Download the WWF iOS or Android app on your phone or tablet, join the Party, select your Apple TV device and WWF will launch the content and synchronize it to the host.

You may wish to give your Apple TV devices unique names if you have more than one in your home so you know which Apple TV to choose from the app.

If your Apple TV does not show up as an option then this is nearly certainly due to the phone being on a different network or subnet than the Apple TV or the Caavo Companion app not being installed/open on the Apple TV.

How do I join a party and watch on Nvidia Shield, TiVo Stream 4k, or other Android boxes
To view on Nvidia Shield, TiVo Stream 4k or other Android boxes, join the party using Chrome and then cast it to your streaming device (Menu> Cast).

As a Guest, what type of control do I have on the show (play, stop, pause, etc)?
Guests do not have any control capabilities over the show.  Just sit back and enjoy.

As a Guest, can I leave and rejoin a party?  (how?)
Yes. You can leave and rejoin the party anytime.

Via Chrome, click on the WWF plugin icon and select leave party.  The show will continue to play but will not stay in sync with the party.  Then click on the WWF plugin icon again, enter the party name, and select join party to rejoin and sync back up with the party.

Via the mobile app, just click on the LEAVE PARTY button.  Then enter the party name, click on the FIND PARTY button to find the party, click on the JOIN PARTY button, and select your Roku/Apple TV to rejoin the party.

As a Guest, can I change devices during a party?
Yes. Just leave the party and join again on another supported device.

As a Guest, can I invite others to the party?
Yes, Guests can forward the party link and/or party name to others.

What happens if I minimize the mobile app or move it out of the forefront?
On iOS devices the content keeps playing on the Roku/Apple TV but you may lose sync with the rest of the party.  If that happens, bringing the app back into the foreground will resync the show.  If you are the host, the party will re-sync to you.  If you are a guest, you will re-sync to the party.

On Android devices, the content keeps playing on the Roku/Apple TV device in sync.

What happens if I close or quit the mobile app during a party?
If you close the app, you will leave the party.  The show will keep playing on the Roku/Apple TV device but you will no longer be in the party and you will not stay in sync with the party.  You can rejoin the party by relaunching the WWF mobile, finding the party name, selecting the join party button, and then choosing your Roku/Apple TV.  If you are the host, the party will re-sync to you. If you are a guest, you will re-sync to the party.

What happens if I close my mobile device (or it goes to sleep)?
On iOS devices (iPhone/iPad) the content keeps playing on the Roku/Apple TV device but you may lose sync with the Host (or if you were the host, all guests may fall out of sync).  If that happens, opening the mobile device and bringing the app back into the foreground will re-sync. If you are the host, the party will re-sync to you.  If you are a guest, you will re-sync to the party.

On Android devices, the content keeps playing on the Roku/Apple TV device in sync.
