Watch With Friends Open Beta Knowledge Article

What is Watch With Friends (WWF)?
We created Watch With Friends to make it easier to watch Netflix on your TV with friends, wherever they are. It’s free…..and you don't even have to own a Caavo device or account to use it.

There are multiple Netflix watch party extensions available (most notably Netflix Party) but viewing is limited to Chrome. WWF allows you to watch on Chrome, Roku, Apple TV and eventually other platforms including Caavo.

But before we Publish this quarantine-fueled labor of love we need your help to make sure it’s ready for prime time!  Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to download a beta version of the Watch With Friends app (iOS or Android) or the Google Chrome extension, then create a watch party and share it with friends.  Most importantly... please share any feedback or bugs through the app so we can work to make it even better!

What do I need?
Each person involved in the party, host & guests, need access to a paid Netflix account along with the WWF app on either Android, iPhone/iPad, or the Chrome browser extension.

  • If you plan to view WWF on Apple TV, you’ll need to install and open the free Caavo Companion app in order for the mobile app to find the Apple TV and send the program to it.
  • To use Nvidia Shield, TiVo Stream 4k or other Android boxes, join the party using Chrome and then cast it to your streaming device.

NOTE: The host who creates a watch party from a mobile device will want to use the Netflix app (host may not find a “share” link if navigating to Netflix.com on a mobile browser)

Host & guest
Host
Only one host can create and run the party but can transfer control by sharing the host PIN.  If using the mobile app to create the party, they’ll be asked which Roku or Apple TV device they wish to view the party with. (Only devices on the same network as the mobile device will be displayed.)

Guest
Guests join the party by either clicking a link sent from the host or by searching for the party name.  If joining via the mobile app, they’ll be asked which Roku or Apple TV device they wish to view the party with. (Only devices on the same network as the mobile device will be displayed.)

Guests will not have the ability to control pause/RWD/FF on any client ( streaming devices/chrome browser)

  • If you join early, the program will be paused.  If you join late the video will fast-forward to the point where the party is at, which may take a few adjustments by your device before syncing up properly.

How to Create a Party
The first step is to create your party. You will need to install the Watch With Friends (WWF) mobile app or Chrome extension. Next, fire up Netflix and choose what you want to watch. While it’s tempting to stop at Trending Now, we’ve been discovering some real gems buried deep within the Netflix experience. Your extra scrolling efforts may be handsomely rewarded.

How to Create a Party with the WWF Mobile App

  1. Once you’ve installed the WWF mobile app, open your Netflix app (not a browser)
  2. Choose a show or movie on Netflix, tap info (i)> Share icon (the “share” links aren’t always available if you open a browser instead of the Netflix app) shareicons.jpg
  3. Tap Copy Link
  4. Open WWF app, tap Create a New Party
  5. Paste link from Netflix
  6. Create a Party Name and 4-digit Host PIN

How to Create a Party with the WWF Chrome Extension

  1. Install the WWF Chrome extension
  2. Choose a show or movie on Netflix.com and play it
  3. Click the WWF Chrome extension icon puppydog.jpg
  4. Select Create a new Party
  5. Create a Party Name and 4-digit Host PIN

Your party name is like a passcode your guests will use to find your party, so don’t be afraid to get creative and put a smile on your guests’ faces. Your Host PIN gives you control of your party, so use something you won’t forget.

After you create your party, we’ll use your party name to generate a unique party link that’s good for 7 days (or until you end your party).

Known issues (no need to report these)

  • If you leave Netflix on your streaming device, you may not be able to rejoin the party at the same point as everyone else. Try exiting the watch party and rejoining it.
  • You will not be able to change the program after you have started the program.
  • Some content metadata is not available and hence users may find seasons/episodes missing on Mobile clients while creating party. In such cases they should use the plugin to create the party.
  • Apple TV device discovery is flaky sometimes from iOS clients.
  • While iPhone is in sleep, push notifications aren’t received for iOS app.
  • Selecting "watch credits" at end of episode play, the navigation does not work for guests.

How to report a problem
WWF is currently in an Open Beta, meaning it is still in testing and not officially supported.  Any feedback should be sent directly to our engineers.  As such, please do not contact Caavo Customer Support for any reason.   If you encounter an issue, please click on the Feedback question mark icon at the bottom of the mobile app or bug icon at the bottom of the Chrome extension. feedbackicon.jpg

Please let us know the following details:

  1. What symptom was experienced?
  2. Who faced it? (guest or host)
  3. Detailed steps to reproduce
  4. Is this consistent?
